Elk Island Winter

Elk Island winter scene

My wife and I had a captivating winter visit to Elk Island National Park recently, quite magical and refreshing. It was a cold morning, completely overcast and about -20 C. Hoar frost had decorated all the trees and grasses the day before, and light snowfall overnight further emphasised the frostiness of the scenery. I had come in with just the Canon 70D with the 70 – 300mm zoom lens (and a little Olympus E-PM1 for general photography), expecting to take winter bird and wildlife shots, but soon realised that landscapes and macro should have been my goal! I was hoping for snow-dusted, frost-breathing bison, but besides chickadees, there were no other animals to be found.
